We stayed at an old CCC campground called Blackberry Crossing just outside of Conway, NH. The drive from Stowe to our campground was beautiful and took us from the Green Mountains to the White Mountains. Our campground was situated right in the White Mountains and was perfect. We had only a few other campers near us, and we basically had the campground to ourselves.
Along the way, we pass Franconia State Park and several scenic overlooks. With the trailer behind us, we didn’t think it would be a good time to visit those, so we dropped the trailer and came back the next day.
The Franconia Flume was a bit pricey, but definitely worth it. We walked across several covered bridges, and then climbed up the Flume which is a narrow gorge carved over time by eroding the softer earth away leaving the granite cliffs intact. There are several glacier erratic boulders on the hike, as well as one of our favorite parts, the wolf den. The wolf den is a narrow rock formation that you have to squeeze through. It was fun for me and the kids to go through it. Andrew walked around.
After we finished at the Flume, we went to The Basin. This is a circular bowl that has been carved by the waterfall above it. It was a quick walk to get to The Basin from the parking lot, but there is also a bike path from the Flume that could get up there if you felt up to a longer excursion.
Once we finished there, we drove back to the trailer stopping at all those overlooks we skipped before. Some are more scenic than others. The White Mountains were beautiful and had some great hiking.
