National Park Recap: Big Cypress National Preserve

We set a new trip record! We stayed put for 2 weeks in Key West, just relaxing and appreciating the sun. We also enjoyed visits from Grandma and Santa!

We discovered the (free!) MLK Community Pool and had it nearly all to ourselves. We also snorkeled at the Fort Zachary Taylor and Bahia Honda State Parks, but unfortunately there wasn’t much to see.

After New Years, we headed up the Gulf Coast. At Big Cypress National Preserve, the kids completed their Junior Ranger books and received an incredibly cool badge and patch.

We wrapped up with an amazing morning tour of the 10,000 Islands. Our magnificent ranger guide (a self-professed bird nerd) identified ibises, frigate birds, osprey, pelicans, terns, and more. She shared that the frigate bird could sleep half its brain at a time and fly for up to 56 days straight. Finally, a pod of dolphins surfed our boat’s wake and leapt out of the water.
