National Park Recap: Mammoth Cave

From New River Gorge we drove to Kentucky. We spent one night at a beautiful Harvest Host winery, one night in Owensboro at a resort, and then 2 nights at Mammoth Cave National Park. We spent an afternoon visiting the visitor center, and taking a short nature hike around Echo Spring (that comes up from the cave river!).

The next day we had booked a tour called the Domes and Dripstones tour. We descended 260 stairs at the very beginning, and then hiked back up to the surface for about 3/4 of a mile. We took an optional side trip in the cave tour to go see some cool stalagmite and stalactite formations. The cave was huge with deep pits and soaring domes. It definitely earned its name.

The kids both earned their Jr Ranger badge, plus an extra Cave Scientist Jr Ranger badge, and post cave tour ice cream treat.
