National Park Recap: Muir Woods National Monument

We’ve been moochdocking in front of Andrew’s parents house for several days, visiting friends in the area. Andrew’s family lives near Muir Woods and has been coming here for a long time. They really wanted to introduce the kids to this redwood forest so close to the city. It really is amazing to have a redwood forest of this size set aside for preservation this close to a major city. Muir Wood requires reservations, so don’t expect to show up and be able to come right in. We saw many cars be turned away. Even with the reservation system in place, this park was quite busy and not nearly as peaceful as a typical forest or park would be, due to the proximity of the city. We came during a busy time as well, 10am. An earlier reservation would have leant itself to a more quiet visit.

We took a hillside trail up and around that was less populated and got us off the main wooden boardwalk, but we still encountered quite a few other hikers along the way. There were too many hikers not wearing masks, and the trail was too narrow, for us to feel comfortable taking off our masks for long before a new set of hikers would come along. There were moments of quiet in the forest, however, where we could hear birds and wind and water.

During quieter times Muir Woods would be a very relaxing retreat from city life. I can see why this park is so popular. A forested trail system like this doesn’t really exist this close by in San Diego. Getting out into some trees on a hike is rejuvenating.
