We came through OKC on our first trip. There’s a really excellent science museum that the kids wanted to visit again, and it was along the best route for us. During the first part of the pandemic, the Cowboy museum also became quite famous due to their security guard’s Twitter attempts. We found out The Cowboy is included in our reciprocal membership (NARM museum network) and decided to visit!
We buttered the kids up with a day at the Oklahoma Science Museum, then went to The Cowboy the next day (followed by another visit to the Science Museum). I don’t know about the rest of the family but I really enjoyed The Cowboy. The Prix de West exhibit hall was just packed with amazing works of art. The kids liked the outside exhibit areas as well because there was a playground. While the kids played we were able to explore the different replica Native American homes that can be found throughout the Southwest. Many tribes were represented, and had audio presentations to educate as well. Back inside we explored an old West town complete with church and school room. There were other exhibit halls dedicated to historical and Native American clothing and art, and history of colonization, rodeo, and modern clothing. It even went into history of early trading of glass beads for pelts.
I really appreciated the equal representation of Native American history in all of the exhibits.
While in town we were able to get laundry done, grocery shopping, etc. We had reservations for 4 nights, and ended up staying 5 due to a snowstorm overnight! The RV park was super accommodating. We laid low for the day while the snow continued to come down. We played outside for a bit, and the next day built a little snowman. The kids were very excited to see more snow on the trip.
