National Park Recap: Buffalo National River

We are basically trying to use up some time going from the gulf coast to Colorado because we’re trying to buy time until warmer weather is more guaranteed (as much as anyone can expect warmer weather in the spring in Colorado). Buffalo National River wasn’t originally anywhere on our list of places to visit, but the campground at Tyler Bend is open year round and is free to stay until March 15!

There are no hookups, but there’s a dump station, water spigot, and a nice bathhouse with warm showers and flush toilets. We picked a spot right on the river. The max number of other campers we saw were 8 (out of 28 sites) on one night. The rest of the time it was just 4. We were not expecting northern Arkansas to be this beautiful. The river is a gorgeous green color, and there are bluffs along the river that show an amazing geological history. We did a hike to the homestead and beyond to the river view overlook. The kids earned Jr Ranger badges. We heard animal noises at night. We were visited by a skunk one night that sprayed up the place. The weather was beautiful until our last day.

The campground has a nice big open lawn area that was perfect to practice throwing discs and for the kids to run around. The kids rode their bikes a ton all around the campground road.

All in all it was a lovely couple of days just hanging around in a beautiful place. The last day was rainy so our solar wasn’t able to top us up on power. The next day was forecasted for a lot of rain so we decided to leave a day earlier than planned and head to western Arkansas. (And it’s a good thing we did because there were tornado watches and warnings very close by our campground!)
