National Park Recap: Congaree National Park

We spent 3 nights outside Congaree in Mill Creek Park and drove into the park one day for a day trip. We packed lunches and snacks, visited the visitor center to get Jr Ranger books, and set out on a 2.5 mile walk around the boardwalk.

This was a really nice hike/walk. It was easy and fully accessible, but the length of hike may deter some people. We took a couple hours to do the whole thing so we weren’t exactly going at a brisk pace. The trail has a really nice guide you can get from the visitor center that points out several features along the way including an old moonshine still, cypress “knees”, palmeto trees etc. We decided to do the boardwalk in reverse to minimize contact and interaction with other hikers. This ended up being an excellent idea. We had the hike all to ourselves, whereas we would’ve been surrounded by several groups of hikers had we gone the normal way.

Congaree has some of the biggest f*cking spiders I’ve ever seen in my life. We also saw some lizards, turtles, hawks, woodpeckers, and squirrels.

The boardwalk was a really peaceful walk that I’d recommend to everyone who is short on time visiting. We considered coming back another day but decided to lay low instead. There were several other hikes we would’ve liked to do also.
