National Park Recap: Dry Tortugas

Andrew and I left the kids with grandma and went to Dry Tortugas via the Yankee Freedom III ferry. The weather called for storms so we were a bit worried about going, but we have no idea when we’d come back. If we had canceled we wouldn’t have been able to reschedule. We would have tried to do standby. So we went. We were greeted on the way to the ferry with a sunrise rainbow. The ride out was very bumpy. Lots of sea sickness on the boat. I had to move from inside to the sun deck of the boat when I started feeling sick. I was getting pelted by 35 mph rain. Thankfully I remembered my emergency poncho!

We were all very thankful to arrive onto dry land after the 2 1/2 hr beating. We got snorkel equipment and attempted to snorkel from the North Beach. Big mistake. 6ft wa=ves crashing right at the sand. We did manage to get out into the water but visibility was non existent. I learned that I absolutely cannot swim straight when I can’t see anything. Getting back out of the water was a whole other ordeal. Andrew managed to get out ok. I had bad timing with the waves. I had to duck dive under 2 big waves, then when I got my fins off another broke over me and pulled me back out rinse and repeat a couple more times of me being tossed around by the waves. Andrew finally got close enough I grabbed his hand and he pulled me out. Then we lost one of my fins to a wave. It came back on another wave. But I also lost my mom’s underwater camera. Another guy pointed and asked if it was mine. We both ran to it but another wave took it and that’s the last we saw of the camera. I’ve been finding sand in all sorts of places even after hosing off and showering multiple times.

We returned the snorkel gear and decided to just explore instead. We got Jr Ranger books and went around Fort Jefferson to fill them out. By the time we finished that it was time to get on the ferry to go home. The ride back was much much smoother as the weather had cleared up really nicely.
