National Park Recap: Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

We visited the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island on day 5 of our visit to NYC. The last time Andrew and I visited NYC and went to the statue, we weren’t able to get tickets into the statue or pedestal because they had sold out weeks prior. This year, due to Covid, all climbs up the statue are closed, but you can still climb up the pedestal. The pedestal climb is limited in people. The island itself has a great museum, but the pedestal now also has a new museum that tells the history of the construction. It was a great walkthrough. The views from the pedestal are really amazing (and windy). We visited the larger museum on the island, and the kids did their Jr Ranger worksheets. The larger museum has a really well done park video, in three separate “theaters.” Once one video finishes, you move to the next room to continue the story. The kids loved the movie and so did we. The kids also really enjoyed being able to walk up to the old torch and replica of the face. They REALLY loved all of the pop art with the statue’s likeness on it, especially the Lego version.

We got to Ellis Island a bit late in the day, so we didn’t have much time before we needed to board the ferry back to Manhattan. We did manage to complete the Jr Ranger program for Ellis Island, and saw a lot of the second floor. We ended up just missing our ferry and having to wait for the next one. Due to our tight schedule at Ellis, I only got this single picture.
