National Park Recap: Wind Cave National Park

Wind Cave National Park is a very small park with only a few trails. The main attraction is the cave. The visitor center offers a couple different hour to hour and a half long guided tours in the cave.

Wind Cave is a dry cave so it doesn’t have all the spectacular formations that other caves like Carlsbad Caverns has, but it has its own personality. It’s a literal maze and can be very easy to make a wrong turn. The map of the cave system in the visitor center is mind boggling complex. And what Wind Cave lacks in the wet cave formations, it more than makes up for in amazing box work which is so hard to capture on camera but is incredible to look at. Box work is very reminiscent of the layers of a corrugated cardboard box, but mineralized and delicate, and hanging from the ceilings *everywhere*.

We took the Fairgrounds tour which was 1.5 hours and had lots of steps. I was worried about all the stairs but it ended up not being as bad as I thought it would be. The kids were nice and worn out by the end of it as well. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and tour here and would recommend it to everyone!
