Travel Recap: Kennedy Space Center

Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center definitely left an impression. Our family is full of space nerds so we were pretty excited to visit KSC. Our campground was right across the water and we could see the Vehicle Assembly Building!

We stopped at the information booth and asked for a good day itinerary. The woman there gave us a thorough itinerary (including times we should get to specific places). The highlight for all of us I think was the bus tour to the Apollo firing base. Getting closer to some of the launch pads, and seeing the rocket up close were really mind blowing.

KSC also does an amazing job with immersive storytelling. You get to relive the final countdown for Apollo 8. They even rattle the seats and ceiling to make it feel like it did that day with the rocket taking off so close by. They did a similar thing with the Spaceship Atlantis and the Hall of Legends. I wish the sound volume had been a little lower. The kids had to cover their ears for a lot of it (and so did I).

We ended our day at Planet Play which is a new experience for kids to go crazy and play in a huge space themed play area. The only thing we would’ve changed was a way to ensure kids couldn’t leave without their parent (like Chuck-E-Cheese does with a serialized UV hand stamp or something). It felt way too easy for a child to slip out the exit and it was next to impossible to keep eyes on your kid the whole time. The kids had a great time playing. It was just a bit stressful for us to keep an eye on them.

All in all a great day. The only thing that would’ve made it better was a rocket launch for us to see from our campground. Can’t always have everything though!
