Travel Recap: St Augustine, FL

St Augustine and Anastasia State Park was our home for 2 nights. Our stay in Anastasia State Park was… not great. We had some pretty crummy campsite neighbors and our site was full of trash when we arrived. You can’t win them all I guess. The proximity to St Augustine was nice though, as well as the beach access within Anastasia.

We spent our first afternoon on the beach and playing on one of the three playgrounds. The next day we drove into St Augustine to visit the historical district.

We started at Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. This is a really awesome fort that resembles a sea turtle from above. There were super ornate cannons we’ve never seen before. We met a really nice volunteer who told us all about how to load the cannons (a question in the Jr Ranger booklet), as well as sat for a quick interview. He was really informative.

Next we went to the Pirate Museum. This museum has a lot of real pirate artifacts, and a room dedicated to pirates in movies (like Goonies). You can set off a fake cannon, do a sensory experience “below deck” that was a little too scary for the kids, and complete a scavenger hunt for “treasure.” It was a hit with the kids but I’m not sure I’d spend the money a second time. Ben bought a small treasure chest from the gift shop. There has been a lot of “Pirate Tag” and “Treasure box hunt” play ever since.
