Travel Recap: Mobile, AL, Biloxi, MS, and Waveland, MS

We camped at Meaher State Park just outside Mobile, AL. The day we arrived it was battery cold and rainy but we were rewarded with the most amazing sunset. The state park is right on the water. Unfortunately there’s some hurricane damage they’re still recovering from so we weren’t able to walk the Delta boardwalk, or on the pier. We walked to the back beach where we found out that “beach” meant crushed oyster shells. We went into Mobile one day to visit the Science museum. It was a really nice museum where we also watched an IMAX movie about dinosaurs that used to inhabit the Antarctic.

From Mobile, we drove to Biloxi, MS and the other half of Gulf Islands National Seashore. Davis Bayou Campground is fairly small, and very close to the water. We completed Jr Ranger badges, walked the paths around the visitor center, and attended a ranger talk about national defense, and ship island where there’s an old fort. The ferry to the fort is shut down for the winter so we couldn’t go. We made up for that by attending our first Mardi Gras parade in Ocean Springs! The kids loved catching beads. The floats were fun, it wasn’t too crowded, and we hung out with some other families while waiting.

Our final stop on the Gulf Coast before starting to head north was Waveland, MS. We went to a really fun children’s museum, Lynn Meadows Discovery Center along the way to kill some time before we could check in. We stayed at Buccaneer State Park which has a disc golf course, a really nice playground, and a water park (that was sadly shuttered for the winter). We spent our days here playing at the playground, playing disc golf, and relaxing a bit.
