Travel Recap: Savannah, GA

From Charleston we drove to Savannah, GA. I couldn’t convince anyone to do a ghost tour or visit the Girl Scout related stuff. We settled on visiting the Tybee Island Lighthouse, Fort Pulaski, and Forsyth Park.

The Lighthouse and associated keepers village houses on Tybee Island has been preserved as a living history museum. It’s the tallest Lighthouse in Georgia. The admission fee was reasonable, so we all got tickets and climbed to the top of the Lighthouse. James took some convincing to climb the stairs. They aren’t for people really scared of heights. We managed to get him to climb all the way to the top (with breaks at every window) and took in the view of the coast.

Fort Pulaski is nearby so we took advantage of our America the Beautiful pass and visited there as well. This is a really cool Fort. The gassy hills just outside the fort walls are a maze of tunnels and rooms. It’s also surrounded by a moat, and has two drawbridges. The Fort had tons of preserved cannons as well as reconstructed and preserved rooms to show what life was like when it was functional.

Finally, we spent half a day at Forsyth Park playing on the playgrounds, and walking to get some lunch nearby.
