National Park Recap: Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park

We camped at Lake Tobesofkee near Macon, GA. We had a beautiful lakefront site. We drove to Ocmulgee Mounds as a day trip. We started in the visitor center and watched the park film. The film laid out a great timeline for the area, different uses, etc, dating back thousands of years. The museum itself had all sorts of artifacts found in the area, laid out by era.

The mounds themselves can be visited via several different trails. We took the main trail from the visitor center to the Earth Lodge, Cornfield Mound, British trading post, Great Temple Mound, and Lesser Mound. There are informative signs along the trail. The Earth Lodge was excavated and restored to what they believe is its historical configuration. You can go inside Earth Lodge and see the molded seats around the edge, fire pit in the center, and the eagle head denoting the leader’s seat.

Unfortunately colonizers decided to demolish some of the mounds to install a train track right through the middle.

It was a really informative view into how ancient people lived in the area (and how colonizers both unintentionally and intentionally wiped out an entire society of Indigenous people).

The kids did their Jr Ranger books (which can be mostly completed in the visitor center) and we’re sworn in as Jr Rangers.
