When Liz and I thought about worst-case reasons why we might end our trip early, we imagined it would be due to us not enjoying it as much as anticipated, going crazy in a small space, or due to someone needing surgery. We weren’t expecting a global pandemic.

In response to the shelter-in-place recommendations, we practiced social distancing by staying in our trailer, avoiding shared buildings, and hiking away from crowds. Unfortunately state parks closed their gates, national parks eventually followed, and even RV campsites were closed to short-term campers. It was a good idea to start fighting the virus, and probably should have happened sooner, but it left us with few options. We stayed in a friend’s driveway in Georgia for a bit, and on land in Texas, hoping to wait this out. But it looked like things were going to be bad for quite awhile, so we began the long week-long trek home.

We made it back April 1. Liz made cloth masks for us when we’re outside. Grocery stores were picked over, but we managed to finally restock yesterday.

We aren’t sure what’s next for us. We may look for jobs, or we may try to wait it out. If businesses start opening again, we might take an abbreviated trip to Yellowstone, The Grand Tetons, Glacier, and the midwest to see family. It’s too early to tell.

Please stay safe out there!
